“Our architecture is defined by the undogmatic examination of a project’s particular topics, not by continuous application of identical formal arrangements independent from task and location. In doing so we are following an integrated work approach starting from the urban requirements, the constructional and cultural context as well as the function of each building typology.“
The Dusseldorf-based practice HPP Architects is one of the few German architecture firms whose designs have shaped both reconstruction work after the Second World War as well as architecture and urban development since German reunification. The partnership was founded more than 80 years ago, and is now run by the fourth generation. It employs more than 300 staff at 12 sites, including Istanbul, Sofia, Shanghai and Washington.
Numerous HPP projects have shaped architectural history. These include the ‘Dreischeibenhaus’ for the Thyssen group in Dusseldorf, and also the EXPO Village in Shanghai and the ‘AufSchalke’ football stadium in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. The practice’s range of services encompasses all architectural and general planning services; predominantly in projects involving administration and commercial buildings, hotels, hospitals, sporting and cultural establishments and urban construction and residential projects.
The Vodafone Campus in Dusseldorf, capital of the German state North Rhine-Westphalia, was constructed on the site of a former brewery. The newly built headquarters of the communication business, in the form of a closed campus, provides working space for approximately 5,500 employees.
A particular challenge was to ensure that the new buildings were integrated into the existing urban context, without the campus being sealed off from the neighbouring residential area. The area was therefore created as a consistent urban quarter, containing a public park and featuring restaurants and cafes in the new buildings’ ground floors. The buildings’ architecture reflects the client’s self-image: communicative, dynamic and innovative.
