The planing and realisation of complex medical research and care facilities, such as hospitals, university clinics, special clinics and rehabilitation clinics, builds the centre of competency of  HWP Planungsgesellschaft, in Stuttgart. Every BIM model is kind of a project`s ‘planning DNA’ that contains the entire data relating to a building, which can then be used for analysis and operational purposes as well as for further development.

The Okmeydani Training and Research Hospital in Istanbul is going to be the ‘hospital of the future’. Thanks to the interdisciplinary planing, led by HWP, not only does this hospital meet the very latest medicinal and technical requirements, but also sets new standards when it comes to sustainable building and the design of large earthquake-proof structures.

Because Istanbul is in a region that is highly susceptible to earthquakes, a design according to static requirements was essential. Therefore Werner Sobek a civil engineer from Stuttgart developed an earthquake isolation system. The basis of this concept involves special pillars that are fitted with floor isolators which are connected to a solid floor plate. The floor plate and the load-bearing walls are firmly affixed with floor studs. Due to that flexible design, the building’s shell can react with movement, without collapsing in the event of an earthquake.

The communication technology, especially the solid connection between the IT network to the clinic’s medicinal technology, was also planned on the premise of a possible heavy earthquake occurring. Even after a seismographic catastrophe, the new hospital should be able to continue operations without interruption. The new complex of buildings allows rapid expansion of capacity if required: The buildings’ surrounding areas, including greenery, have been designed to be used as a protection zone for civilians immediately and also serve as a space resource in the event of medicinal care facilities need to be erected temporary.
